A Message from our Principal
Parents, Guardians, and Students:
Monday, teachers from across our vertical team will be meeting in the Anderson theater (we are dodging the construction) to discuss quality outcomes for all students. Our speaker, Patrick Briggs, is with the state AVID program. AVID is a program designed to support students who do not typically enroll in pre-AP and AP classes. However, the strategies employed through the AVID program help all students by engaging teachers in a process of never under-estimating the heights to which students can rise when given the proper support and encouragement. I have personally heard Mr Briggs speak and this will be a powerful discussion of high expectations for all students – Pre-K through 12th grade. In the afternoon, teachers will be meeting in their departmental Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to plan for the rest of Semester I. We are quickly approaching the end of the first semester and teachers are meeting in course-alike groups to make sure that all materials are covered and assessed during the first semester. We hope that students will enjoy their day off and will come back to school on Tuesday ready to tackle the last six weeks of this semester.
I will be attending the Texas Business and Education Coalition Awards dinner in San Antonio Monday night. I will be representing Anderson HS as we are recognized as one of thirteen high schools (eight of which are magnets) recognized for consistently high achievement by our students. The measurement of high achievement was the commended level of performance on the state accountability measure by our students for three consecutive years. The TBEC said that this year’s standards were the “highest in the history of the award and recognition was the hardest to achieve over the history of the award.” We thank our students, parents, and staff for their hard work in achieving this recognition.
Friday was our last football game and it was a wonderful way to end the season. We defeated Austin HS, 14 –10, and we would have made it into the play-offs if Bastrop had defeated Bowie. Instead Bowie will be the fourth team in the play-offs from District 25-5A. The freshmen, JV, and varsity teams had a wonderful season and provided us with plenty of thrills. The Band, Belles, Cheerleaders and Color Guard celebrated “Senior Night” by introducing their families at half-time as they all said “Good-Bye” to this year’s half-time performances. It was a great football season and a great way to start off school year 2009-2010. Volleyball celebrated their most successful season in District 25-5A by beating Austin HS and almost beating Bowie. Our athletic and Fine Arts Programs just continue to improve and we feel ours is the premier program in all areas in AISD.
The Little Theater group will present, “Our Town,” this week – Thursday through Saturday. This is the second production of our Little Theater and this drama promises to be a “can’t miss” performance. Please plan on attending at least one night in order to support our rising thespian group. This weekend is the Senior Garage Sale, as well, on Saturday. Watch for the location change to be published this week. We are having gas-line work done on Saturday in the faculty parking lot area in preparation for the construction on the band hall and the science wing and we have been advised to limit traffic on the campus during the day on Saturday. The seniors are checking into one of the church parking lots across the street from Anderson. Watch for details on this big sale as there will be some wonderful bargains available while supporting the senior class.
On Thursday, please join us in the cafeteria for a Conversation with Superintendent Meria Carstarphen about the AISD budget. This is a wonderful opportunity for all of our vertical team parents, staff and students to identify the programs that are critical to the educational needs of our students. We do not want to miss this opportunity to discuss the unique issues facing the Anderson HS Vertical Team with Dr. Carstarphen. A light snack will be served at 6:00 followed by the discussion at 6:30. Come early for a good parking spot and for some good conversation with our friends and neighbors in the vertical team.
With the rain this weekend, it really feels like the season is changing. Enjoy the day off on Monday and join us for the many activities planned for the upcoming week.

Principal

Anderson’s Little Theatre Company will present Thornton Wilder’s Our Town.
* November 12, 13, and 14th at 7:30 p.m. in the Anderson Theatre*.
The play centers around the themes of life, love, and death which are illustrated in the everyday routines of ordinary folk in Grover’s Corners, N.H. Wilder mingles the simple and the profound in order for the audience to understand the everyday occurrences in this show are “an allegorical representation of all life.”
In the current Newsweek, Jeremy McCarter says that “Our Town isn’t a nostalgic wallow in small town life. It’s a harrowing story about human limitation–all the beauty and value we fail to recognize in our day-to-day lives”.
Tickets are $3 for students and senior citizens, $5 for adults. (New Prices!)
