Anderson High School is a part of the most successful and cohesive vertical team in AISD. Our team consists of Anderson HS, Murchison MS, and Doss, Hill, Davis, and Summit ES. I would argue that there is no better vertical team in AISD than ours. Once every couple months, our schools’ principals, PTA presidents, and ACPTA representatives come together to discuss hot topics in education, current events, and campus successes and challenges. I cannot tell you how good it makes me feel to be with this group of committed adults who have the best in mind for our children and for those coming behind them. The principals meet even more often to share best practices and work together to prepare the team’s students for the next academic level. At last Thursday’s Anderson vertical team meeting, School Board Trustee Vince Torres was invited to speak. He shared his thoughts on district matters, including the search for a new Superintendent and his desire to see a detailed review of the district’s management and budget. He also encouraged us to speak out during the upcoming legislative session to let our elected officials know that the state’s funding system is inadequate and unfairly penalizes our school district and its students. (While AISD is labeled by the state as “property rich,” 60% of the 82,000 students it educates come from low socio-economic homes. The state’s Robinhood Plan mandates that AISD must give back to the state over $170 million of our property tax revenues. Think what Anderson and its vertical team schools could do with a small amount of that money!!) All this goes to say that when you are asked to contact your local officials and share your opinions – DO IT. They need to hear from us. It will make an impact on their voting decisions.
Looking forward to walking the Capitol halls with you next spring and proud to represent the public schools in northwest Austin!
